What to Expect for Your First Dance Lesson

Couples Practicing Ballroom Dance in StudioEveryone has to start somewhere, even dancers. From day one of dance lessons, you’ll start learning the basics, helping build the foundation you’ll need as you advance to more difficult dances. If you’ve recently signed up for dance lessons at Arthur Murray Dance Studio or you’re thinking about signing up, here’s what you can expect when you first walk through those doors.

What to Expect

The staff, instructors and students at Arthur Murray are like a family. We do our best to make sure every new dancer feels comfortable. The studio is a no-stress, no-pressure zone where you can escape from daily life for a little while and socialize with other dancers. And we always encourage students to learn at their own pace – and make sure they’re having fun while doing it. If you have any concerns or questions, feel free to discuss them with your instructor.

The Introductory Lesson

Before jumping straight into dance classes, new students at Arthur Murray Dance Studio will take an introductory lesson. During this lesson, you’ll be matched with an instructor who is highly experienced in teaching a variety of dance styles. They’ll take this opportunity to get to know you, figure out what you hope to achieve and assess your skill level.

After that, they’ll start creating a program they think will work best for you, your goals and your schedule. For example, maybe you have a wedding coming up that you need to be ready for in time, maybe you’re someone who want to learn some clasic latin dances for salsa clubs. Whatever it may be, or if you’re new to the world of dance, the instructor can take a moment to go over each style with you, from ballroom to swing to merengue! This is helpful if you’re someone who wants to dance but aren’t too sure where to start.

How to Prepare

You don’t need to bring or wear anything special on your first lesson. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in, whether that’s workout clothes or just something loose. Also, be sure to wear a good pair of shoes that support your feet and allow for effortless mobility. If you’re coming for wedding dance lessons, you’re welcome to bring your own music. But if not, we can provide some for you. And remember, you don’t need to have any prior dance experience to begin!
